You may be wondering, "What is cystitis?" Cystitis is a bladder and sometimes urethra inflammation that can occur along with a urinary tract infection, which causes pain in the bladder. There are things at home you can do to help and treatments through a doctor's care. Read this article to learn more about cystitis.

What are the symptoms?

Cystitis is commonly caused by a bladder infection, which is much less apt to happen in men because a woman’s urethra is shorter, making it easier for bacteria to enter and infect the bladder.

Symptoms

The symptoms of cystitis can come in many forms. Some of the typical cystitis symptoms can include: cloudy urine, fever, lower abdominal pain, a urinary problem such as having difficulty going to the bathroom, strong smelling urine and more. Some may even find blood in the urine, female patients seem to have this more often.

Causes

Cystitis causes can be due to a bladder infection, prostate enlargement or inflammation, irritation to the genital area from soaps and detergents. As a matter of fact, medical treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy can cause chronic cystitis. If you notice any serious symptoms such as a high fever or inability to urinate, seek a doctor's care as soon as possible.

Cystitis treatment

There are a few different remedies for cystitis but most of them will involve an initial visit to a physician. Antibiotics are typically used as a cystitis treatment but there are a few things you can do at home that can help prevent intestinal cystitis such as drinking enough water each day, eliminating perfumed soaps, sprays and baths and urinating when you need to and often.

Complications

Although it's not common, there are certain complications that can arise with cystitis such as kidney failure, kidney infection and sepsis. That is why it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible if you suspect that you have cystitis. It is also important to keep up with the proactive things you can do at home. You can get cystitis relief once you start on the right treatment, whether it is through a doctor's care with antibiotics or for minor cases or prevention, making sure you do the right things and get enough fluids in order to flush out the bladder properly.
